Painted Snipe 彩鷸 at Mai Po

I've been watching the Painted Snipe at Mai Po for about a month now and was very pleased to see two familes with 3 young each last week. Here is one of the males with a few day old youngster. There were two others hiding in the grass nearby. Neil.

Great~! I lost my wallet with those permit together make me can't go maipo to see this snipe..

Which pond are they on - is there a reliable time to see them? I have a day off next week and would like to go and see them?

Andrew, I've been back twice in the last week to see them with no luck. The WWF staff have been cutting the grass on the main islands in the Main Scrape (#16, 17) and the snipe must have moved on , maybe down near Hide No. 1. There are a lot of waders arriving though so they are worth a worth a visit. With the heat it's better to be there either very early or stay until sunset. I will be there on Monday and Tuesday again looking for them.Neil.

I stayed overnight at Mai Po on Monday and with the help of a Painted Snipe expert we saw two birds in the main scrape (Hide 2) , after the sun went down , around 7.00pm. I didn't see any out in daylight hours. Neil.

Here is a photo taken after dark (7.00pm) with my Swarovski scope and Olympus 7070wz. The exposure was 5 seconds at iso 400.Neil
