One of the Chinese names for Hoopoe is "smelly squaw", from its notorious nest defense strategy.

戴勝，以繁殖期其巢極臭而聞名。一般雀形目鳥類，如麻雀、烏鴉、雲雀等晚成性 鳥類，雛鳥的排泄物，有凍凍果質般的外衣包裹著
，母鳥有將此搬運至他處捨棄習性。惟戴勝之巢通常利用樹洞，或崖壁窟窿等為巢 ，牠因沒有這種行為而污穢巢居。又雛鳥於受驚時會由尾部尾脂腺排出極強的霉味 。這種情形和鼬遇敵時，由肛門能放惡臭而逃一樣；因其巢位置，易受地上外敵侵 襲，此惡臭有嚇阻外敵來襲效果。故在中國有臭婆娘之芳名。
戴勝，在金門島上低樹林、墳地常見。由於牠們常出入於墳地，或營巢於破墓穴， 故金門人認為戴勝是一種不吉祥的鳥類，對牠們有很不好的印象；金門人則稱戴勝 為墓坑鳥。按，閩南語墓穴，稱為墓坑。
