Anton - Nice photo, but I think this is a 1st-summer Black-headed Gull, not a Saunders' Gull. Firstly, no Saunders' Gulls have been reported off the boardwalk since Mai Po re-opened, as far as I'm aware. The only gulls I've seen off there recently are Black-headed Gulls. (Although, interestingly, with regard to Saunders' Gull, the Avifauna states that an "occasional bird may linger into late April or early May, and the latest spring record for HK concerns a first-summer that remained until 30 May 1993".) However, this is exceptional and any gull you see in HK at this time of year (late April/May) is likely to be Black-headed Gull. Amongst other differences, the bill of Saunders' Gull is short, stubby & black. The bill on the bird in the photograph is longer, thinner and (less obviously) bi-coloured. The wing-pattern also indicates B-h Gull (although the angle of the photo makes this less easy to discern). The photographs in "A Photographic Guide to the Birds of Hong Kong" are useful here, although unfortunately there are no pictures of Saunders' Gull in flight in the book. dave diskin
