Very nice Owen. I still haven't seen them this year. Neil.

These are great pics - I'm envious of them, really, Owen - but aren't they a bit too "blue"? It seems to affect the brown upperparts, giving them a purplish tone. Mike Turnbull

thanks mike and sorry that I'm color blind (most of my friend know that), and am trying my best not to touch the part related to color. most of the color are generate by photoshop automatically while retriveing the photo. here you got another angle of this bird and hope it tell weather its a Japan or Asian Paradise Flycatcher. (as someone I meet today tell me it's a Japanese Paradise)

I think it's got to be Asian, but the photos this year have been very interesting in highlighting some of the issues in identifying these birds. Assuming this is all the same bird, in some shots it has a clearly cut off hood and in others it's less clear cut. In all, I think it's too "light and bright" for Japanese, but there is the purplish tone to the upperparts - which prompted my point about colour reproduction accuracy (or whatever it's called - not only can I not take photos, I have very little knowledge about the technical side of digital image handling). Sorry I didn't get chance to talk to you about this at the PRB at LMC this morning - hope you got some views and some shots. Mike Turnbull

Like Mike, I too wonder if there is some colour distortion in the photographs of Paradise Flycatchers that appear above - and also in some of the other photographs of Paradise Flycatchers that have appeared on the BBS over the past few weeks. However, I think the first photograph shows clear features of Japanese Paradise Flycatcher. The mantle & tail are darker than Asian would show, clearly contrasting with the broad buffish fringes to the tertials and edges to the flight feathers. I think Asian would appear much more uniform than this bird.

In addition, looking at pippenho's photographs of Sep 28th, I think that photos 2, 3 & 4 show characteristics of Japanese rather than Asian. Compare them with the obvious Asian in kittyko's photos of Sep 22nd. But I would again agree with Mike's doubts about the photographic reproduction.
