Karl, I flew direct to Kota Kinabalu with Malaysian (less than 3 hours) and then got a connection to Sandakan (40 minutes), also with MAS. At Sandakan I was taken to a jetty and then 2.5 hrs up river to the Sukau Rainforest Lodge. A typical stay is 3 days, 2 nights. I did 4 and 3. I went for the birds but actually the birding was not great. The river level was very high and water birds were not numerous. Walking in the rainforest was restricted to the lodge boardwalk. I did see some good stuff though. Lesser adjutant, Great black woodpecker, Fiery minivet, White-fronted falconet, Ruddy kingfisher, Rhinoceros, Black and Oriental pied hornbills, Bornean blue flycatcher (very common but an endemic), Hooded pitta, Crimson and Brown-throated sunbirds, some Spiderhunters I wasn't sure of, Chestnut-winged flycatcher, Chestnut-rumped babbler, Lesser cuckoo shrike, Green imperial pigeon, Crested serpent eagle (common), Lesser fish eagle (common), Hill myna, Buffy fish owl, Blue-eared kingfisher, Ruddy kingfisher... I guess it wasn't too bad. I saw wild Orang utans and lots of Bornean pygmy elephants and Proboscis monkeys. I am just starting to put up some pictures at: http://www.pbase.com/andrew57/borneo_06 The lodge was eco-friendly (which also means reasonably basic) but friendly and the resident naturalist, an old chap called Winston, very illuminating with amazing stories to tell. If you want more detail drop me an e mail. Hope this helps

Andrew, been to Sukau for a short stay last year but not for birding, very likely I will soon have another trip there to explore a bit more. I will certainly seek your help when I am ready. sad that I didn't manage to see a single Bornean pygmy elephant. Keep posting your more photos!
