目前情形是:43隻黑面琵鷺死亡，14隻搶救中

台灣台南地區死亡黑面琵鷺持續增加，台南縣政府農業局森林保育課今天下午表示 ，已有四十三隻黑面琵鷺死亡，十四隻搶救中的黑面琵鷺中，只有三隻狀況較好， 可以勉強站立。

Dear Friends,
 
It is very sad to inform you that we lost 41 Black-faced Spoonbill in Tseng-wen Estuary in past two days. The exact reason is currently unknown, however, preliminary analysis of stomach contents from dead birds indicated that the death might be due to bactria toxin or organic phosphrus. Some 14 individuals are still under intensive care by regional institution and conservationists. We hope they can recover from this stress. The government authority also participates the investigation the cause of the death.
 
The Black-faced Spoonbill counting number by local bird society on December 7 was 705. This figure is highest ever in Taiwan. The birds affect by this incident comprised almost 8% of total population wintering here. It is a great loss for us.
 
We will keep you informed for further developements.

Dear members,
 
It is sad that many spoonbills died in Taiwan. In case that same accident may happen in Hong Kong. I would like to remind memebers to keep eyes on spoonbills. Also, please report immediately if you see any sick or dead spoonbill.

Sad to hear about it. Would like to know if there're other bird species involved in this tragedy. It is really strange that if BFS are the only victims. Any input?

Very sad to hear the news. I had observed most of them touching each others in Mai Po, Nov 2002.  
 
Hope that will not happen in HK. Their habits shall make the disease easily spread over the species group.

元凶是C型肉毒桿菌 The Cause: Botulism

Autopsy found that the cause of BFSP deaths is botulin, a toxin produced by bacteria that cause food poisoning

Botulism is quite rare in winter, and very rarely attack spoonbills. This is the first case to spoonbills that I am aware of - if the deaths were really caused by botulism.
 
Botulism is a much bigger threat to ducks and shorebirds. If you find a dead bird in the wetland, send it for autopsy if possible. Always report sick-looking birds to the warden or WWF staff at Mai Po.

    棲息在台南縣曾文溪口的國際保育候鳥黑面琵鷺，先後發生兩波肉毒桿菌中毒事件 ，造成六十六隻死亡悲劇，縣長蘇煥智今天上午帶隊，強制拆除保護區內的非法定 置魚網，希望給黑琵安全覓食環境，避免外出覓食再度中毒。  
 
    　縣府農業局長周克任於今天上午十時卅分，率領拆除隊長吳文進等拆除人員，前 往七股鄉曾文溪口黑面琵鷺保護區，執行強制拆除非法定置魚網工作，有部分漁民 到場抱怨，黑琵死亡不能怪罪在定置魚網，因為他們世代在當地設立定置魚網捕魚 ，不能把漁民當犧牲品。   在場漁民只是口頭抱怨，並未阻礙拆除工作，因為縣府昨天已先與漁民協調，已有 八名漁民同意配合拆除，將由縣府安排轉任即將增聘的黑面琵鷺巡守員工作，另外 兩名漁民至今仍不顧配合拆除，由縣府執行強制拆除。  
 
    　縣長蘇煥智於上午十一時到場視察拆除狀況，他強調從目前已死亡的六十六隻黑 面琵鷺屍體檢驗結果，顯示牠們的肺部有氣泡，經專家解讀為飢餓造成，可能因保 護內的食物不足，才會外出覓食中毒死亡，為搶救這些國際保育候鳥，不得已才強 制拆除非法定置魚網。  
 
    　蘇縣長強調，黑面琵鷺發生兩波死亡事件，已引起國際保育界嚴重關切，為確保 黑面琵鷺在保護區內的食物來源，只好強制拆除非法定置魚網，希望確保黑面琵鷺 覓食棲息安全。

小白鷺也受難  
 
黑面琵鷺第二波的劫難至廿二日止已有十四隻異常，其中九隻已死亡，而昨天也發現一隻軟腳小白鷺，外觀症狀與黑琵相同，防治所人員特帶回觀察救治；防治所人員說，醫治傷病的動物是他們的職責，而小白鷺雖非保育類，但也是生命，既然發現了就該搶救。  
 
防治所所長謝耀清表示，第二波的黑琵死亡事件，發現的多數是老鳥，體重約在二 公斤，經兩天搶救，已有一隻可自行覓食吃魚，還有四隻情況也慢慢好轉，若能度 過三天的危險期，五隻黑琵應該都可存活下來。  
 
昨天在黑琵棲地附近也發現一隻軟腳小白鷺，防治所人員專程送回所內觀察，初步發現其症狀有軟腳、肌肉無力和軟頸等情況，防治所認為，有必要觀察是否與黑琵一樣感染肉毒桿菌毒素，同時也依照搶救黑琵模式，予以救治，防治所人員表示，此隻小白鷺若能存活下來，算是受到黑琵死亡事件的庇佑。  
 
另縣府透過各種關係遍找國內外相關單位，均無法順利找到肉毒桿菌Ｃ型的治療血 清，而找到法國的是檢驗血清，無法使用，因此縣府已決定緊急函文給農委會，要 求儘速向國際購買肉毒桿菌Ｃ型的治療血清，或者由相關單位展開研製工作，以防 日後所需。  
 
昨天防治所也查閱相關資料得知，在國外常發生水鴨或水禽感染肉毒桿菌毒素，若 能即時施打抗血清，症狀輕微者治癒率約八、九成，而症狀較嚴重者治癒率則為五 至七成，如今肉毒桿菌毒素首見發生在黑琵，未來也可能再發生，所以有必要先準 備，以防不時之需。  
 
另因再發生第二波黑琵死亡事件，防治所認為，數量仍可能持續增加，已準備近百 份的相關物品、藥品，期能發揮搶救功效。

學者建議台灣加強魚塭管理
 
昨日(1/3)為止，台灣已累計有69隻黑面琵鷺因感染肉毒桿菌Ｃ型而死亡。
　黑面琵鷺死亡事件引起國際保育界重視，日前兩名日本專家專程來台，協助我方 調查與預防後續事宜。農業委員會昨日召開「黑面琵鷺死亡事件研討會」，邀請各 界學者專家共同研討，與會者認為政府應重視黑面琵鷺棲地管理工作，加強魚塭水 質整治，避免造成厭氧環境，滋生肉毒桿菌。
 
此次來台的日本天王寺動物園獸醫師竹田正人指出，他所服務的動物園，也曾爆發 大量鳥類因為肉毒桿菌毒素致死事件。肉毒桿菌傳染途徑可能透過帶原鳥類境外移 入，污泥堆積造成厭氧環境，或者水溫提高滋生肉毒桿菌。他們正朝定期清毒與打 掃、淨化水質等方面防治，同時希望開發疫苗預防。
 
農業委員會家畜衛生試驗所所長林士鈺也指出，原本黑面琵鷺應該不會食用死魚， 而感染肉毒桿菌毒素，不過，今年渡冬的族群量甚多，在食物不足的情況下，可能 因此攝食死魚感染毒素致命。
