Dear members, A Black-faced Spoonbill, received colour rings when it was still in nest in North Korea during the summer 1995, was found again in Mai Po on 4 November 2003. It is interesting that this spoonbill is the only confirmed individual to be recorded in three different places (Japan, Vietnam and Hong Kong). This bird was also seen almost the same date in autumn 2002, i.e. 5 November. Now, this spoonbill is 8 eight years old and it is also the only known longevity record. Colours of rings are red over green on right leg and yellow on left leg. The colours of these rings get paler and it can be seen as white for yellow ring, and blue for the green ring. Therefore, it has to be cautious when reading the rings colour of this spoonbill and also other colour-ringed spoonbills. The Black-faced Spoonbill Research Group is also collecting information of the colour-ringed Black-faced Spoonbill occurring in Hong Kong. If you see any spoonbill with colour rings, please record the date, place, ring number (some birds carrying rings with numbers), colour of rings and send to bfspoonbill@hkbws.org.hk Thanks Yat-tung Yu Mai Po NR 米埔 04/11/2003 Equipment: Swarovski ATS 80 HD (zoom lens) + Nikon 990

Dear all, This colour-ringed Black-faced Spoonbill was seen again in Mai Po on 29 October 2004. This observation is particularly interesting to: 1) Good to know that it is still alive! This bird is nine years old now! It is also the longest logivety documented record of this species. 2) Compared to the date of its appearance, the bird arrives to Hong Kong almost in the same time in three consecutive years. 3) This bird was recorded in other places before but it shows a preference to visit Hong Kong more now. Does it mean the bird finally choose to go one place when getting older, or fewer places it can choose in recent years? The Black-faced Spoonbill Research Group welcomes all reports of any sighting of the Black-faced Spoonbills with colour rings. Details (date, place, time, colours of rings, positions of rings, on which legs) can be sent to bfspoonbill@hkbws.org.hk Thanks for your attention Yat-tung YU

Dear all, This colour-ringed Black-faced Spoonbill was seen in age of 9.5 years old in December 2004. Details were published in the latest Forktail (21:176-177). The same bird is found again in Mai Po this morning and so it is now 10 years and 4 months old. This is the largest longevity record of this species. Best regards, Yat-tung Yu Hong Kong Bird Watching Society
