The other Korean ringed Black-faced Spoonbill was seen in this afternoon. This time the bird is originated from South Korea. A Black-faced Spoonbill carrying a red ring with number 'K37' on right leg and three smaller colour rings in yellow (from top), red, yellow was seen with other 80 BFS feeding in the channel of drained Pond 12 in at Mai Po Nature Reserve. This bird was the firstly seen in Hong Kong. The other colour-ringed Black-faced Spoonbills present in Mai Po are A21 (green, red, yellow, with antenna) and A31 (green ring on right leg, radio-tag on left leg). Yu Yat Tung

Dear CF, Yes, that is! Thanks for providing the picture. I tried to make photo of this bird in afternoon but the bird was far away and also my digital camera did not function! The bird was ringed as a chick in South Korea on 4 June 2002. By the way, this picture show a good example that the colour of rings could be difficult to read. Black-faced Spoonbill inhabit in intertidal area and it wades the muddy water everyday for its food. Also, this plastic colour ring become fade after prolong exposure to sunlight. We can see the red ring in the middle looking more like in orange now. So, please be careful when you try to read the rings colour of the ringed Black-faced Spoonbill. Please also record other information such as age of the bird, with transmitter or not, etc. When did you see this bird? Regards Yu Yat Tung

Dear Mr. Yu, This photo was taken on 16 Nov. 2003 13.30PM at Nam San Wai. 38nos. of BFS were found at the Kam Tin River channel. 5 of them have colour-rings and number markers. Their numbers are A14,A21,A34,A35( with transmitters) and K37, I have checked my photos again and again, but i can't see BFS A14. Never mind, hope I can see them again at this week end. regards CF
