Dear members, The 2004 International Black-faced Spoonbill Census was taken on 16 to 18 January. This census is to provide annual and comparable figure of the globally endangered Black-faced Spoonbill. In census of this year, survey in Hong Kong was successful due to tremendous support from various parties including members of HKBWS, AFCD, WWF and Asia Ecological Consultants Ltd. Coverage is also the highest among all the censuses in the past from Lok Ma Chau to Pak Nai, Mai Po boardwalk to nullah by Wetland Park, Tin Shui Wai and abandoned fishponds by Woo Sang Wai. Results are nearly fully submitted and a total of 238 Black-faced Spoonbills were recorded so far and the count was made at 1700h on 16 January 2004. This is the highest count in Hong Kong during this census. The increase is almost up to 30%, comparing to 179 birds in January 2003. It indicates the number of wintering Black-faced Spoonbills in Hong Kong is rising in recent years. That reflects the importance of Mai Po, and Hong Kong to this species becoming higher and higher. Again, thank you very much to your supports Best regards, Yu Yat Tung Coordinator The International Black-faced Spoonbill Census, Convener Black-faced Spoonbill Research Group The Hong Kong Bird Watching Society
