Based on discrepancies in bird migration times and routes, two famous birdwatchers, Martin Williams from Hong Kong and Nail Moores from Korea, refuted the microbiologists’ view that bird flu was spread by migrating birds. However, a researcher from the University of Hong Kong commented that they were experts in birds rather than in influenza, and influenza experts have evidence to show that migrating birds do take part in spread of the disease.

【明報專訊】本港及南韓兩名知名的觀鳥專家，花了年多時間研究候鳥遷徙時間、 路線，以及禽流感爆發的時間，認為禽流感爆發與候鳥遷徙時間和路線並不切合， 故對微生物學家指候鳥傳播禽流感作出反駁，他們亦呼籲全球的觀鳥學會對此言論 提出反對。
管軼﹕鳥專家非流感專家
然而，自本港發現禽流感感染人類個案後一直做有關究的香港大學微生物學副教授 管軼說，提出反對候鳥是傳播禽流感病毒的兩名專家，均是鳥類專家而非流感專家 ，但是流感專家蒐集到證據，顯示候鳥有份傳播病毒。
同樣，本港的知名觀鳥專家威廉斯(Martin Williams)與南韓鳥類專家摩亞斯(Nail Moores)，亦批評微生物學家、流感專家多數從醫學角度，推測禽流感病毒是由候� 噤ダ翩A卻缺乏科學數據和研 究，威廉斯更批評有關的言論只屬推測及有誇大之嫌，並指微生物學家對鳥類生態 並不熟識。
禽流感現時已傳至歐洲及西伯利亞。兩名觀鳥專家指有關候鳥會傳播禽流感的言論 ，將會令逾百萬隻候鳥遭受不必要的宰殺。
他們認為，禽流感的擴散，與飼養雞隻的人沒將農場管理得好、讓雞隻四處走動有 關，而且非法鬥雞亦是其中傳播病毒的途徑之一。
