Over 20 dead birds were picked up by AFCD yesterday.

元朗鳥屍兩日未清理
【本報訊】漁農自然護理署昨日全日共檢獲二十多隻雀鳥屍體，其中元朗的一隻已 伏屍兩日，但尚未被清理。
在元朗發現的鳥屍長約二十公分，毛色黑、啡，嘴部尖長，躺在十八鄉迴旋處旁Ｌ ２公路的「影線」上。據發現牠的姓楊女子稱，在兩日前已見鳥屍，但一直無人清 理。記者昨晨十時許到場，果見雀屍，但因該處附近並無民居，估計因而無人理會 。
另外，昨午一時許，大網仔路大環村一名外籍男住客（六十六歲），發現屋前花園 有一隻二十公分長、墨綠色的死雀，恐有病毒傳播，於是報警。
警員到場戴上口罩檢視後，通知漁護署人員到場處理。約一小時後，漁護署人員趕 至，並穿上全套保護服，先以消毒藥水噴灑雀屍及其四周，再以鉗子夾起死鳥放入 膠袋內，帶走等候檢驗。

No dead birds were found during the waterfowl count in Lut Chau and Tai San Wei area on 22/01/2006. How's the situation in the other areas? Ooops! Get to fill up the count result and send it to the coordinator, otherwise, be punished!

A pretty obvious couple of observations perhaps but (a) the bird in the lower picture looks more likely to have flown into a window than to have died of disease - obviously an autopsy would settle that - and similarly (b) when AFCD start looking for dead birds the number they find does not indicate that that number have recently succumbed to disease - in other words we don't know what the "normal" underlying number would be if you sent teams of people looking for them, and yet we get dramatic headlines like "AFCD find 20 dead birds".

That's the point of posting the photos here - personally I suspect a significant number of birds were killed by windows rather than diseases.

I agree with Mike that conducting an autopsy after all will help to reveal if it is disease related. Gov. should closely monitor and publicize their findings from time to time as they do right now. I would certainly be delighted to hear if the result is H5N1 negative.

AFCD picked up over 40 dead birds yesterday, including feral pigeons, Spotted Doves and Sparrows. Two were reported at Kowloon City within an hour.

九龍城1小時發現2死雀
【明報專訊】九龍城昨日在一小時內發現兩隻雀仔屍體。昨午5時許，有市民在太� l道西377號對開發現一隻長約9吋、灰色、懷疑是斑鳩(下圖)的雀鳥死在地上。警 員接報到場，先用垃圾桶蓋覆蓋雀屍，再通知漁護署。署方職員身穿消毒袍、戴口 罩及手套到場將雀屍檢走化驗。
相隔不足1小時，嘉林邊道41號一幢大廈地下停車場，又發現地上一隻懷疑是烏鴉( 上圖)的雀鳥屍體。漁護署職員將之檢走後，在現場一帶噴灑消毒藥水及藥粉，防 止細菌或病毒散播。
如果漁護署公佈死因統計數字，會否減輕公眾的憂慮呢？
If AFCD would release statistics of the causes of death, would that help to relieve people's worries?

A dead White-backed Munia was wrapped in newspaper and dumped in a foam container outside a bird shop at Kowloon City yesterday. People in the neighbourhood thought that was not a proper disposal and called the police. AFCD said there is no need to inform them if only one bird is dead, and explained the procedure for disposing of dead birds: masks, surgical gloves, etc. The dead bird came from a shipment of over one thousand to be sold for Buddhist releases.

【明報專訊】九龍城啟德道一間售賣雀鳥的店舖，日前購入了一批禾穀雀，昨早店 主準備「落貨」將雀鳥搬入店內時，發現其中一隻死去，遂以報紙包裹，棄於舖外 發泡膠箱中。有街坊見狀，質疑店主未有通知漁護署的做法不當，於是報警，警方 其後只登記店主的資料了事。漁護署表示，由於在該批雀鳥中只有一隻死亡，店主 沒有必要通知署方。

2 dead birds were found at Times Square yesterday.
A dead Magpie Robin was found yesterday morning at Wong Tai Sin, near the site where a dead Crested Mynah was found on Feb. 1. AFCD picked up 40 dead birds yesterday.

AFCD picked up 120 dead birds yesterday. A wounded Spotted Dove was chased into a school at Tsz Wan Shan before being caught by AFCD. People drove away a cat that was stalking a dead bird at Mongkok.

深水 [土步] 喜鵲屍證實染H5
【明報專訊】漁農自然護理署證實再有喜鵲帶H5禽流感病毒，署方前日接到市民轉介，在深水[土步]埗石竹路撿獲一隻喜鵲死鳥，初步化驗結果帶有H5禽流感病毒，這是繼上周三屯門發現禽流雞後，再現禽流個案。

AFCD suspected a dead Magpie picked up at Fa Hui last Friday carried the H5 virus. They found no abnormality among cage birds at the nearby Bird Garden. Guanyi, Associate Professor, Department of Microbiology of HKU said the virus found in dead birds in Hong Kong are very similar, probably from the same source.

本 報 記 者 昨 到 雀 鳥 花 園 視 察 ， 公 園 非 常 冷 清 ， 一 姓 歐 店 主 表 示 ， 公 園 一 般 晚 上 八 時 收 巿 ， 但 不 少 商 戶 在 五 時 已 提 早 離 場 。 他 指 附 近 雖 然 發 現 病 死 鳥 ， 但 不 代 表 禽 流 感 會 爆 發 ， 「 佢 o地 係 食 o左 o的 有 菌 o既 食 物 ， 或 者 死 o左 好 耐 無 人 理 ， 變 o左 H5N1 ， 搞 到 我 o地 生 意 好 慘 淡 。 」
港 九 雀 鳥 同 業 商 會 前 主 席 盧 伯 良 不 相 信 附 近 有 雀 鳥 感 染 H5N1 ， 又 指 飛 來 的 野 鳥 無 可 能 接 觸 家 用 觀 賞 雀 ， 故 巿 民 無 需 擔 心 ， 又 建 議 政 府 仿 效 海 洋 公 園 或 香 港 公 園 的 設 計 ， 在 雀 鳥 公 園 建 天 幕 或 防 雀 網 作 保 護 。 雀 鳥 花 園 商 戶 召 集 人 黃 超 倫 則 指 ， 商 戶 生 意 大 跌 九 成 ， 擔 心 政 府 遲 早 會 取 締 ， 強 調 觀 賞 鳥 已 作 檢 疫 。 梁 先 生 與 太 太 、 兒 子 一 家 三 口 昨 日 到 雀 仔 街 買 雀 ， 坦 言 不 擔 心 受 感 染 。
