Dear All, A big thank you from WWF to everyone who helped write to the government asking for the reopening of Mai Po and for government to establish criteria to decide whether to close Mai Po in future cases of bird flu. Your letters were especially useful because some f the earlier letters were tables at a meeting of LegCo's Panel on Fod safety and Environmental Hygeine in March when the discussed birdflu. Even though the government is now using the international 21-days standard in deciding when to reopen Mai Po after a cse of birdflu, they still need to tell the public: * why it was neccessary to close Mai Po in the first place. None of the countries where there have been cases of bird flu have closed their nature reserves. In the case of the UK where a dead swan was recently found in Scotland, the government even made a point to tell the public that the countryside was still safe to visit and encouraged people to go out. * how far away from Mai Po does the wild bird need to be before they decide whether there is a need to close Mai Po. This time, the government used the dead Peregrine Falcon at Tin Shui Wai as the excuse for the closure of Mai Po and to start the clock ticking for the 21 days count down the reopening of Mai Po. What if next time the dead bird was found in Wanchai or Lamma? Does Mai Po need to be closed in that case? Whist we can celebrate today, there are a lot of questions that the government still has to answer if we are to stop them from closing Mai Po again next winter. Thank you for everyone's support once again!! Lew Young Mai Po Nature Reserve

Let us give a big hand to WWF and ourselves! Enjoy the Easter gift for the time being and be prepared to repeat our effort to establish our line.
