Hi Everyone It is real pleasure to see the superb results of HKBWS members and to enjoy some of the birds I do not get to see. Could I ask technical question and make a request: Is it possible to keep images to less than 70 or 80 kb and still maintain clear on-screen definition? I do not know enough about computers to know if it is possible. I write on behalf of all those with 56K connections who have to wait a long time (make many "refresh Page" requests and sometimes totally fail to download pictures. I look forward to your expert opinions and to enjoying more pictures. Cheers Mike

| Dear BLee, Do you refer to the following question by Mike? "Is it possible to keep images to less than 70 or 80 kb and still maintain clear on-screen definition? " I think the answer is yes. You can see that most images posted here are less than 80 kb. Of course, I believe the quality of some photos can be shown even better if we don't have the constraint in file size. Regards, Webcreeper

The first photo posted by Isaac Chan today contains lots of details: http://www.hkbws.org.hk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=PhotoGallery;action=d isplay;num=1081603687;start=0 The size of the file is 107KB. I have produced copies at three different levels of lower resolution, 38KB, 63KB, and 84.4KB respectively. The effects are compared below: Top right of photo: 38KB 63KB 84.4KB 107KB (Original) Bottom left corner of photo: 38KB 63KB 84.4KB 107KB (Original) Marginal improvement in quality diminishes with file size. Most bird photos contain much less details than this example (large areas of sky, water or blurred background). They can be kept under 50KB without any appreciable effect on quality.

| I used this way, quite useful: Original size of picture (sample): 1064 x 768 pixel, approx 110kb 1. Resize it to 600 pixel in length: 2. Save it to lower quality, adjust the level as you wish. I try to save it to lowest quality this time... 3. It make a bit difference, the file size is 20kb. It is up to you to consider the quality. I could see the details through my monitor. How about you?
