It is so frustrated that Penfold Park is fading away. Many migrant species
and resident birds would lose one of their common habitats forever. We found
a little whimbrel in Penfold Park in April 2005. We are afraid that we
could no longer see it again in the future becasue Penfold Park has gone.
Could HKBWS expresses his conern on this subject matter by asking the
related government departments/Legislative Council whether there is any
action being taken to protect this piece of valuable habitat for wild
birds?

Actually, my company is working in this project and I went there this week. From my observation, I found only common birds there.
I found one of the pond was under renovation and there was a lot of bird dropping in the center island of the pond. I guess there's egrets' nesting place in winter. It is true?
Can anybody tell me if there's any rare birds in the Park and where do they usually nest? If they nest on trees, please specify what types of tree or where the trees locate. I think I can help the birds to some extents.

This looks like a kind offer from Mike, I hope that some of the regular bird watchers to Penfold Park responsed to his request.
Hong Kong must retain as much of it green areas as possible

真的嗎 ? 
我觀鳥只有兩年多，也想講出心裡對彭福公園的希望，
我沒有很有系統地記錄，所以也希望前輩們給我指正．
在夏天，鳥種都是留鳥為主，所以只看到common birds是正常的．
要吸引rare birds, 就要維持一個『健康鳥環境』，
common birds 可以給 rare birds 作為一個指示，這裡是『安全覓食塲』．
27/8/2005 那天，我也找不到如：斑文鳥，白胸苦惡鳥，大鷺等怕吵的鳥．
群鳥是靠叫聲互通消息，傳達警示．清溏時嘈吵的小挖泥車聲音可能不利牠們．
所以可否安排大型嘈吵的工程都在夏天進行，避免嚇怕冬來的候鳥．
而在冬天，進行一些小型而平靜的工程呢？
或者，若須要在冬天進行池溏工程，可否在兩水池中安排一個作為『寧靜地帶』呢 ？
但要留約一星期有的適應期．
至於巢的問題，我覺得不用操心，
因為鳥是找合適環境作巢，而不認樹．
只要提供安心的環境，牠們便會作巢．
而對某些鳥來說，彭福公園只是一個食堂．
因為太空曠喇，他們怎也不願在這裡作巢．
牠們的原則是：鳥巢不可以太張揚．
牠們或會在跑道兩側較寧靜草地處作巢．或會在山上作巢，白天來這裡找吃．
所以滅虫方面，便是一個矛盾的問題．
旺角一個小公園，有一年有很多草蜢，樹叢生長得亂七八糟，但那一年路過而小憩 的林鳥品種很多．
但今年公園經過修輯，樹叢整整有條，卻較以往疏落，草蜢亦少了，鳥也沒出現．
水清無魚，用在鳥也頗適合．
彭福吸引我的地方，隨了他的寧靜之外，
她還擁有不同的鳥環境．如：
１．低層的大遍草地
可吸引鶺鴒，家鴉，鷚，喜鵲，椋鳥等鳥尋找昆虫蚯蚓等活體．
又有大量草的種子，吸引斑文鳥等群鳥．
２．中層的矮叢
供給小林鳥覓食，休息，逃避和作巢的地方．
如：斑文鳥，縫葉鶯甚至白胸苦惡鳥等.
又提供伯勞鳥躲藏守獵和安全進食之地．
亦給我隱閉地拍攝之用．
３．可惜，中高層的樹叢
卻不太茂密難以吸引林鳥．如大山雀等．
縫葉鶯也須要這地帶作巢，樹葉要大塊的，最好只用兩片給縫上便成巢的．
４．幸好有鳥的必須地：水池
公園內中央的水池形成了護城河的作用，可以給不太害羞的鷺鳥聚居作巢之用 ．
大大給他們安心．
雖然我見到有小艇，但未見過有工作人員登島．可知登島次數非常少．
５．還有淋花用的漏水水喉，因為往往較隱閉，都成為小林鳥喜愛的沐浴和喝水處 ．
牠們不喜歡太張揚的水源，況且據說水池中有四百多隻龜，太污了，對鳥羽毛 也不太好．
說真的，清涼的溪流或穿洞的小花洒都吸引小小鳥．
天身便背著高品質的羽絨，那會不怕熱呢．
６．還有在日落前半小時關閉的規例，
可吸引一些喜歡靜的鳥，在黃昏時段才斯斯然地回來渡宿．
７．若可接受個別人仕申請，入夜後或晨早時段進場，那就太完美了．
另外還有一些提議，如果可以：
１．多些高層樹叢．
便可以吸引林鳥．
也可以作為彭福公園親近大自然的新地標．
不過，種植和維護的費用也．．．哈哈哈．
其實可否考慮把一些被違棄的冠軍樹移入彭福呢？可減輕購樹的成本，
也讓香港老樹有一個安身立命之所．
不過，我不清楚土質和光照量是否適合．
２．多些花樹．如洋紫荊，炮杖花（我指橙色那種，不是紅色那種），象牙花．
約十米內還要種有 一至三棵約１０米高的茂密樹叢作為休憩．
太陽鳥可能也會進駐．
牠是留鳥呀！也是我兩年來在香港所見的，最鮮艷奪目的鳥種．
太陽鳥在很多公園都會除著盛放的花朵而出現，
如京士柏，九龍公園，水坑口，中文大學等．
我私底下會以牠的出現判別公園的吸引程度．
若可控制花的生長高度，則有助觀賞．
花量和花蜜量是決定該區可容立的雄鳥數量．
３．多些果樹．是小果類．對樹木種類仍然不熟識．
在九龍公園樹林的結果期，就見過好些候鳥．
在野外的鳥，主要活動就是找吃，沒有吸引他們的天然食物，那會進場呢？
４．另外，被翻動的土地，也會吸引過境鳥下來碰運氣．
裡邊可能有青蛙，蛇，等．．．
我常想，過境羣鳥在空中憑甚麼決定休息地呢？
１．一遍反光的東西？ （水源）
２．一遍風吹不太活動的綠色？ （短草地）
３．一遍風吹有波紋的綠色？ （長草地）
４．一遍黃色？ （泥地）
以上內容，僅作參考．
期待前輩們的補足．
給『路鳥甲』一個休憩進補之地．
噢！差點兒忘記，
還要加設指示牌：
”警告家長們不要教疏小孩拍手嚇雀，香港隊拿取獎牌除外”
”警告女傭們不要教疏小主人追趕群鳥，小心要替小主人作長時間清潔！呵呵！”
”警告新觀鳥人仕，不要長時間用手指，指示鳥兒位置，一擰轉頭，鳥兒必定不翼 而飛！”
”應運用十點方向處的小黑點等言語指示鳥位置，請不用擔心別人懷疑你精神上有 小問題．”

Mike,
During summer basically birds found in Penfold are common residents. Some mirgratory birds rest in Penfold as a refill station.
A little whimbrel was seen feeding on grassland for about a week on 27/4/05.
4 Oriental Greenfinches stayed on the five Lagerstroemia speciosa located outside the maze during March 05.
3 Fantail Snipes rested under bushes on the big piece of grassland at the end of the park for a couple of days on 1/4/04.
A Black-browed Reed Warbler stayed among the rocks and was seen for a few weeks during Nov.04
During migration & Winter, pipits,wagtails, Stonechats, & Shrikes came here to feed on worms & insects in the grass.
Besides being a refill station, nests of Black-necked Starling, Common Magpie, Egrets and some other common birds can be found in the trees, light poles and the Egretry.
We have a file of our personal birding record with 63 species seen in Penfold Park from Nov 03 to April 05. Would it be of use to you ?
