Love the clean bg, details and sharpness ... I'd pick the last shot as the winner given the choice. Nicely done, Angus! KK Hui ARPS www.geocities.com/kkhui_001

Very excellent photos. I also opt for last one because of the turning head, clean background and visable legs.

Thanks all for the encouragements! The bird/birds were very cooperative, I was basically working at minimum focusing distance (ie ~5.5m). Its really exciting working so closely with a bird. With hind sight, I could have done a lot better in a number of ways. For instance, I think the background is too dark, I should have shifted position a bit to chosen a lighter BG. I should have also tried getting closer and swap the converters with extension tubes. Well, may be next time... Betty, nice to meet you and Wai Hung too! Having both of you watching behind me makes me a bit nervous since I am still wearing a "L" plate...

| I beg to disagree, Angus. The dark bg is perfect in this case! What I'd have done was not to stack converters since you were so close to your subject. An 25mm extension tube may gain you a little closer with you 600/4 but not much. Having said that I would have just shot it with a 1.4x converter and get even better resolution on the plumage details ... Exposure wise, I'd have compensated it more on the negative side with an additional -1/3 EV to check the white! KK Hui ARPS www.geocities.com/kkhui_001

kk, thanks very much for the explainations. Actually I haven't stacked converters this time. The first two pictures were with a 1.4x converter, but cropped a bit. The third picture was with a 2x converter, full frame. I was shooting with a 2x initially from around 12 meters. As I got to around 6 meters, I found that I have trouble fitting the bird in the frame!! So I took off the 2x and begin shooting without converters. But the image was too small. I have to crawl back to my backpack to get the 1.4x converter to continue... I was too excited trying to take pictures and didn't really checked the exposure - just relied on evaluative metering. Unfortunately, most pictures were slightly overexposed due to the dark background...

In order not to disturb the stonechat, Angus CRAWL back 2 times to his backpack to get his gear. So much respect to the bird, that's the secret of "how close it is." Betty

Angus, Sorry about the stacked converters thing! I was misled by your statement in your original post saying "1D Mark II EF600 + converters". Please make it a habit to include some important tech/shooting data if you wish to have useful feedback from other photographer(s). This applies to anyone else who posts their images here in this forum ... KK Hui ARPS www.geocities.com/kkhui_001
