Title: HELP ID PLS
Post by Alvin on Jan 26th, 2004, 8:03pm
Details of this record:

date  :25/01
time  :about 12:00pm
weather  : sunny 10-14C
location   : near a park warden post in tai lam chung country park (大欖涌交野公園,吉慶橋旁的交野公園管理站)

Must apologize for the poor quality of these picts since they were taken in a hurry with a handy DC.

Is it Blue and White Flycatcher (race cumatilis)? The very smart combination of blue, black and white body colours, together with the white patches on the tail and sharp distinction of dark breast and white belly fit well with references. The dark colour was a bit washed-out comparing with the cyanomelana race.

I guess it is Hainan Blue Flycatcher (海南藍鶲).

Could it be a Small Niltava?? ???

I thought it is a Blue and White Flycatcher because from the photos the white belly is very outstanding, which can be seperated out from Hainan Blue Flycatcher.

Referring to reference Small Niltava has a black face and prominent trquoise neck spot, which are both absent from the photos. Small Niltava seems to have a greyer or bluish belly.  ???

I have never seen these species before, this BBS provides a very convenient pathway to learn identification skills ~  :D

It certainly looks right for 'cumatilis' BandW Fly. It seems to me the only other conceivable possibility is White-tailed Flycatcher Cyornis concreta, but several things don't look right at all for that either (esp. head pattern and, as far as we can see, tail). Is it just me or is there perhaps a slightly untidy look about its plumage?

I think it's a escaped INDIGO FLYCATCHER [Eumyias indigo].

Description : Medium-sized (14cm) dark indigo blue flycatcher. General colour indigo blue; darkest, almost black, arround base of bill; whitish forehead extending as a whitish brow over the eye; lower breast greyish, grading into whitish belly; vent buff.
