Dear HKBWS members,

HKBWS is going to carry out a Seabird Survey this Spring. The survey will be carried out once every three days. The first day will be on March 21. There are places on the boat for people who are willing and able to help. For details, please contact YU Yat Tung (yya ttung@hkbw s.org.hk) (who will be away this week). I will arrange with the office to give you more details later.

Dear Members,

I have recently received the raw data from YYT, the chief surveyor of the HK Seabird Survey this spring. I have done a brief analysis. Here are some preliminary results.

1. Sum of all birds seen in 22 survey days: 8792

2. Terns
White-winged Tern 754
Black-naped Tern 258
Common Tern 212
Aleutian Tern 200
Bridled Tern 55
Greater Crested Tern 10
Whiskered Tern 6
Gull-billed Tern 5
Caspian Tern 4
Roseate Tern 2
Little Tern 1
Sooty Tern 1
Tern sp. 219
Total: 1727

3. Skuas, Shearwaters, and Auks
Long-tailed Skua 113
Streaked Shearwater 52

I think this project is a great success. It has greatly enhanced of our knowledge of seabirds in HK. I like to thank the surveying team, and also all the volunteers to make this possible.
