Title: Re: International BFS Census 2003 - Preliminary re Post by Simba Chan on Feb 25th, 2003, 9:14am There are definitely more in Japan. The total number should be over 120 birds (the highest count so far recorded in Japan). We are now checking the possibility of double-counting of a few individuals. I would like to remind everyone that, although the ‘increase’ of BFS is good news, the birds are getting more concentrated to a handful of sites: more than 70% of the global population are now only wintering at two sites with a total area of about 10,000 ha (one-tenth of the area of Hong Kong). Other sites, particularly those along the coast of SE China, are rapidly deteriorating. We should help preserving the sites in Macao and Hainan. |
