Title: APMW: Samudra reports on Black-faced Spoonbill Post by Project Officer on Jan 2nd, 2003, 4:57pm Message from Taej Mundkur on Asia-Pacific Migratory Waterbird Forum: Quote" Dear colleagues, There has been recent reports on the forum on the unfortunate deaths of a large number of the endangered Black-faced Spoonbill in Taiwan recently. We do hope that there will be a way to control the outbreak of botulism and prevent the deaths of other birds. On the subject of Black-faced Spoonbill, I have just chanced on the Latest "Samudra" Report No 33 of Nov. 2002, that contains an interesting article entitled "Uncle Ga Ong's Lagoon - the fight over the Binnan industrial complex on the Chiku Lagoon in Taiwan was a tug-of-war between conservation and development" by Wenchi Tsai <jacob7349@seed.net.tw>. Uncle Ga Ong is a local fisherman, and the article provides an interesting insight into his untiring efforts to promote the conservation of this important lagoon in its intact condition, in order that local fishworkers and Black-faced Spoonbill can survive. This article is a timely reminder that waterbirds can often serve as flagships to promote the conservation of our wetlands and help protect the lifestyles of local fishworkers and other people dependent on this important ecosystem as well. Samudra is produced by ICSF - the International Collective in Support of Fishworkers, an international NGO working on issues that concern fishworkers the world over.
