Can you tell from the back view? Didn't get a very good view of the front, but suspect that it was more like the gradual gradation of APF than the distinct dermarcation of Japanese.

This is Japanese for me, Yi Gou.

There's clear maroon (purplish) tone about the mantle and the tail is rather dull - not bright orangey-chestnut as in APF.

The thing about the demarcation of the blackish head and greyer underparts in these two species is the opposite of what you said - its APF that's sharply demarcated and JPF that's lacking that. See plate 64 of Robson (Birds of SE Asia).

I'm a bit confused now - the HK bird book seems to suggest the opposite. Here's the best I could get of the front of the bird - it was grappling with a butterfly.

I'm rather confused by this bird, though I'd still go for Japanese, I think.

Viney (Birds of HK) doesn't in fact say the opposite of what I said, as it is discussing another feature: the demarcation between the grey breast and the whiter lower underparts, which is a bit sharper in female Japanese than Asian, though it is not always obvious.

The demarcation I was talking about was that between the blackish hood and the dark grey chest and shoulders - it seems to be there on this bird but is low down and the shoulders are dark, so I think it's Japanese. The grey/white contrast is harder to see and seems to be less reliable anyway.

Robson illustrates and discusses the differences between our race of Asian (incei) and those further south and west - it is only incei that has the sharp contrast on the throat. Viney illustrates this quite well but does not refer to it in the text.

I get it now - I was thinking of the gradation of the breast colours. Will have to try to get some better pics next time.

Can this be a Japanese Paradise Flycatcher?

There is no demarcation between the the blackish hood and the dark grey chest but clear demarcation between the dark grey breast and the white lower underparts.
