Title: Re: Dove ID ? Please. Post by HarryLi on Oct 10th, 2006, 10:30am Sorry, I am new here. Date added. Mike, thanks for your confirmation. Actually, it was the eye colour of this bird that makes me think that it is a Red Turtle Dove. Was it actually a clue as well ?? |

Title: Re: Dove ID ? Please. Post by Bob Thompson on Oct 10th, 2006, 8:15pm Mike, Could it possibly be a Collared Dove http://www.hkbws.org.hk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=PhotoGallery;action=display;num=1159853241 |

Title: Re: Dove ID ? Please. Post by Japanbirder on Oct 10th, 2006, 10:03pm Primaries and tail pattern fit an Oriental Turtle Dove, possibly a 1st winter bird, as there appears to be only a small patch on the neck. Sean Hiroshima |

Title: Re: Dove ID ? Please. Post by Mike Kilburn on Oct 11th, 2006, 12:18am While this bird shows SOME of the features of both the species mentioned it shows ALL the features of Red Turtle Dove. OTD has a scalloped rufous pattern on right across while this bird is uniform grey. This bird has a black collar. OTD has a more complex pattern on the neck spots, which do not join on the back of the neck , or none at al in young birds Collared Dove, as your pic shows very nicely, is a much longer-tailed species. Title: Re: Dove ID ? Please. Post by Paul Leader on Oct 11th, 2006, 10:58am In addition Oriental Turtle Dove would also show broad white tips to all the tail feathers; this bird has unmarked central tail feathers. Collared Dove would never show rufous fringes to the primaries like this bird. This is certainly a juvenile Red Turtle Dove. |

Title: Re: Dove ID ? Please. Post by Japanbirder on Oct 12th, 2006, 10:38pm I will have to check out my Oriental Turtle Doves more carefully! As well as any pics I am looking at on the net! After I posted my remarks I saw plenty of Oriental Turtle Doves that day and realized I was wrong! I fit were an Oriental turtle Dove it would as Paul said show white on all the tail feathers, have more scalloped reddish-brown feathering on the coverts etc. and have a more developed black and white patterned neck patch (and not collar) as well as being brownish and not greyish in coloration overall. Still, got a better explanation from Mike and Paul! Sorry for causing any confusion! Sean |
