There were good numbers of Skuas on the sea near Po Toi yesterday (5 April 2006), including many Arctic Skuas (see first photo) and a Promarine Skua (second photo).

Several Common Terns were seen on 2 April 2006 at the same site.  This is close to the earliest record of this species in HK.  They are of the subspecies longipennis, I think.

Two shots of a Sooty Tern taken south-west of Po Toi during the Sea Bird Survey on May 2, 2006.

It was with three Bridled and 150 White-winged Black Terns.  We also saw Common, Aleutian and Black-naped Terns.
Two Short-tailed Shearwaters were seen in the morning.  One, possibly two Brown Hawk Owls were noted flying over the sea.

Another very good trip today.

I don't have exact numbers, and I wasn't on the first leg of the trip, but in the afternoon we had some very good views of Streaked and Short-tailed Shearwaters (about 15 and 10 of each), all three skuas (with some of each species giving stunning views, including the biggest Pom I think I've ever seen), at least two very photogenic Crested Terns, +Aleutian, Common, WW Black, Whiskered, Bridled and Black-naped Terns.

We also had another example of that bird which the seabird survey has most surprisingly transformed our knowledge of, i.e. a Brown Hawk  Owl.

I know that Geoff Welch had 960 terns past Po Toi in the early am too - Aleutian, Common, WWB, Whiskered and Bridled I think , + one or two skuas and shears.

On Po Toi the birds were much the same as yesterday, but  Graham Talbot and I saw a Lanceolated Warbler near the Lighthouse.

My final one of the Seabird Surveys, so for my part thanks to Tung for what he did to make them possible and to the crew of the boat for their understanding and cooperation, and safe stewardship of the boat and its occupants.
