Ng Tung Chai 梧桐寨  Autumn 2006 秋
« on: Sep 1st, 2006, 10:52am »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

A female Black-winged cuckoo shrike and two Grey Treepies  were seen below the village around 9pm this morning.

The Cuckoo shrike is 3 weeks earlier than my first autumn record here, and the treepies are four days earlier. Grey Treepie is a resident in Hong Kong, but they seem to disappear during the summer while they are breeding.

late news:

It seems that the Cuckoo-shrike is the earliest autumn record  - by 1 day!

Cheers

A good day for autumn migrants despite the late start 0830 - 1230).

All birds were seen above the temple and below the first waterfall.

Asian Paradise Flycatcher - 2
Hainan Blue Flycatcher - 1 male
Yellow-rumped Flycatcher - 1
Possible Sooty Flycatcher - 1

Eastern Crowned Warbler - 3
Arctic Warbler - 1

Lesser Shortwing - 1

Grey-cheeked Fulvetta - 1

I wonder if there are any records of migrants from Tai Po Kau?

No sign of the Siberian Blue Robin this morning, but  a walk around the whole Ng Tung Chai loop (up to the top falls, then on up above to the lookout point, and down the steep path) produced the following birds between 0740 and 1400.

Crested Goshawk - 1

Mountain Bulbul - 1
Chestnut Bulbul 12

Eastern Crowned Warbler - 1
Arctic Warbler - 2
Pale-legged/ Sakhalin Leaf Warbler - 1
Yellow-bellied Prinia - 1 (uncommon in the forest at NTC)

Asian Paradise Flycatcher - 4 (personal high count for NTC)
Hainan Blue Flycatcher - 1 female
Sooty (Dark-sided) Flycatcher - 1

There were also more than 20 Hong Kong Cascade Frogs, a Hong Kong Newt and a Wild Boar, which ran away uphill.

The day before (8th Sept) there was a Pygmy Wren Babbler heard, an Asian Paradise Flycatcher, Asian Brown Flycatcher and a rather early Yellow-browed Warbler.

Aiya! a very quiet spell for Ng Tung Chai when there are top quality birds everywhere!  This morning, however, there were a few birds present in the usual area between the village and the lower falls.

Crested Serpent Eagle - 1 flushed off the path
Crested Goshawk - 2 inc 1 displaying and one being chased by a Besra

Forest Wagtail - an Ng Tung Chai Tick for me!

Arctic Warbler - 1
Greenish Warbler - 1
Eastern Crowned Warbler - 1
Pale-legged/Sakhalin Leaf Warbler - 1
Mountain Tailorbird - 4, including 1 seen

Hainan Blue Flycatcher - 1 male
Japanese Paradise Flycatcher - 1

Pygmy Wren Babbler - 1 heard

Brown Shrike - 1 seen in the village - another, and long overdue, NG Tung Chai tick!

Cheers

The only bird of interest today was a single Dollarbird  - the first of the Autumn for Ng Tung Chai.

According to the Avifauna the first week of October is the peak period for autumn passage in HK, so hopefully there are more to come.

Big News! a Speckled Piculet was seen for arond two minutes this morning in Ng Tung Chai! If accepted, this will be the third record for Hogn Kong.

The bird was seen with a loose feeding flock which included Rufous-capped Babbler, Blue-winged Minla, an Asian Paradise Flycatcher and juvenile Chestnut Bulbul.

Directions:
Follow the concrete/stone path  from the village that goes up to and past the Man Duk Yuen Temple, and go past the steep track going straight up to Tai Mo Shan (on the right hand side of the path). Do not take this track but go straight ahead (sign posted to Bottom Falls), for around 100m.

Look for an obvious tree standing alone on the left of the path - it has a distinctive fork close to the ground and and the bark is somewhat orange in tone. I have put some sticks in the fork to mark the spot. Close-by, on the other side of the path I have placed some sticks upright against a rock.

As with all forest birds it will probably range widely, so I would recommend looking between the spot marked and the lower falls, but concentrating on the lower section.

Other birds seen today include:

Asian Paradise Flycatcher - 1 (+1 Paradise Flycatcher sp)
Arctic Warbler - 1
Eastern Crowned Warbler - 1
Pale-legged/Sakhalin Leaf Warbler - 1h

Lesser Shortwing - 1 h
Pygmey Wren Babbler - 1 h
MountainTailorbird - 4h

Cheers
