Difficult to identify on these photos, but not sure why it is not a Hume's STL, dark loral stripe, poorly streaked crown and unstreaked breast suggest this species.

It also looks like it has a broken or damaged leg as in all photos one leg appears to be raised.

Paul,

Just concerning the leg-raising, isn't it raising its left in most shots but its right in the first one at least?

Isn't this consistent with it simply having been captured running?

Plus, doesn't the apparently well-marked supercilium and the apparently quite well-marked ear-coverts (seem to be visible in last three shots) favour Greater over Hume's (per Grimmett et al, Birds of Indian Subcontinent)?

Hi Paul and Mike, The bird wasn't holding a leg up - and showed no sign of having an injured leg.

The bird was on the Pui O River on dry mud banks on the waters edge, at about 10.40am.   Viewed from about 20 meters away, with the sun in the sky above the bird (so not the best of lighting).  Viewed with Zeiss Victory FL 10 x 42 binoculars for about 15 minutes, after which the bird flew off, flew back overhead and then disappeared.

The description I took at the time is below:

When feeding the bird jerked forward a couple of feet and fed.  The legs were bent in a usual lark fashion.

Bill pale, stout and pointed;
Crown – buff thinly streaked black, edge of crown darker (forming a dark edge to the supercilium).
Supercilium thick and quite straight, going back to the nape, only kinked over the top of the eye, where it met the white eye ring.
Eye stripe dark.  Eye ring white mainly noticeable at the top.
Upper breast and  throat slightly buffy wash, contrastingwith the white belly
Tail extending beyond wingtips about 15 – 20 mm
Medium covert very dark with pale fringes forming a black bar edged by a thinner pale bar.  Greater coverts not as dark but again with a pale edge which formed a pale bar.  Tertials dark with buff edges.  [I did not notice the primaries projecting].
In flight the underside of the wings were quite dark, tail short and black, rest of underside of bird in flight looked quite white.

Regards Paul
