Title: Sai Kung area 西貢鳥況
Post by Andrew on Oct 2nd, 2006, 4:48pm
Yesterday at around midday I saw a Dollarbird at Ho Chung. This was the first time I had been up there in a while. Today on a tree opposite my house in Pik Sha Road, Clearwater Bay, a Scaly Thrush perched briefly before flying on down the coast.

I suggest that the thrush was probably a female Rock Thrush.

Andrew,
Just to nip any confusion in the bud, I guess Paul means that this was probably a Blue (or perhaps Chestnut-bellied) Rock Thrush, not the species normally referred to as just "Rock Thrush" in Europe ie Monticola saxatilis (aka "Rufous-tailed Rock Thrush")

I too think that's a more likely explanation - depending on what you saw on it,  female Siberian is also a possibility. It is certainly more likely in early October than Scaly.  Both species have the white-striped underwing and white tipped outer tail feathersm, which many Zootheras have.

I see that the Avifauna lists a  handful of Scaly records for as early as 30 September, but I wonder how reliable they are.

Keep posting Sai Kung sightings, Andrew, we do appreciate them.

Yesterday at the Lions Nature Park on Hiram's Highway, near Tsiu Hang Special Area, I had an Asian Brown Fly and a Grey-streaked Fly. Several Dusky Warblers and a Grey Wagtail were also present.

This is a nice site, good for other forms of wildlife too, and is pleasant to visit early morning or after 4.30 pm when the gates to the car park close and any visiting groups go.

There are still parking opportunities if you go along Che Keng Tuk Road and turn left just past the park entrance.

Mike.

Thanks Paul and Mike.  I have had a look on the OBC image database and I'm sure Paul is correct.  I tried to run into the house to get the digital camera and attempt a quick digiscope but it flew away quickly. It looked quite a slim bird and I had even considered a cuckoo of some sort at first but I eventually thought it might be Scaly thrush as I have seen them in the area before but always on the ground  and never perched in a high tree branch. Good learning for me.

I do found the Dollar Bird two weeks ago near Tai Nam Wu Village.
