房署清拆北角[村]的工程於2003年10月完成，地皮開始平整為停車場，房署當時以擔心風大樹倒的理由，把三分之二的樹冠削去。（詹志勇提供）
2/3 of the canopy was removed after the demolition of the Estate completed in Oct 03. The Housing Department explained that this was a measure against strong winds.
房署將地皮用瀝青填平後轉作停車場用，詹志勇去年12月到場觀察，發現榕樹的土圈大大縮小，樹根被壓，連僅餘的樹冠葉片都「消失」。（詹志勇提供）

北角樹王垂危 移植搶救被斥無知 議員質疑為增地價 拔走眼中釘
【明報專訊】近千名北角區居民昨日不滿區內最老的榕樹王病情奄奄一息，聯署追 究房署令樹王「禿頭」的責任，要求署方盡力搶救。東區區議會副主席王國興批評 ，樹王位於北角 [村] 地皮的中央部分會削弱地皮售價，質疑房署因此要「拔除眼中釘」。房署正考慮把垂死的樹王移植到苗圃搶救，但樹木專家批評做法「無知」，搬樹會加速奪去老樹性命。
Nearly a thousand North Point residents have signed a petition asking the Housing Department to save the oldest Chinese Banyan tree in the district. They also demanded to find out the party responsible for the damage. The vice chairman of the Easter District Council challenged that the current condition was probably a plot to raise the value of the land by eliminating the tree. The Housing Department plan to transfer the tree to a nursery for treatment but Prof. CY Jim said such ignorant move would accelerate its demise.
