Owen,

I agree with your concern, and I don't mean to offend you but to me the big closeup is disgusting.

I feel sorry for any bird having to suffer such a death and indignity

Bob

PS: Can we please ask AFCD to remove it tomorrow

I actually saw this bird while it was still alive yesterday morning. As I arrived there at around 10.30, the farmer who I believe lives in the house in the photo, a man in his late thirties/early forties, appeared to be removing the bird from the end of the pole as if he had trapped it. However, I couldn't work out exactly what was going on. I tried to point out to him that bird trapping was illegal in Hong Kong, which he said he knew, and in this case I just left it at that, since what I assume, perhaps wrongly, to be a non-protected 'species' was involved,  and since I can only imagine he is existing at little above subsistence level through farming (again an assumption). Catching feral pigeons could give him a meal and rid us of an unwanted species, I thought, though with the obvious concern as to how selective his trapping might be. He walked off with the stick and bird.  It would now appear he was using it to scare away the other pigeons, or to attract them down??

I agree AFCD should have a word with him - my Cantonese is certainly not up to it.

Owen,

I should have explained my opposition to the photo. As a child I grew up with a pet pidgeon, it didn't have a cage it just lived in an open box attached to our balcony. The bird was rescued by my father after it fell out of its nest. The used to fly all around the neighbour houses and was loved by all the neighbours. It lived for around 6 years.

After this experience I have a great regard to these lovable birds
