Title: Chemical Pollution at Kam Tin ÀA¥Ð¦³¤Æ¾Ç¦Ã¬V
Post by johnallcock on Nov 19th, 2004, 11:19am
I discovered this morning an incident of chemical pollution at Kam Tin: what appears to be oil has been dumped so that it has spilled into a stream.

In total 127(!) barrels were found - it is not known how much oil was spilled but it is visible in an area of standing water and on vegetation in the stream, even several hundred metres upstream (presumably carried here by the high tide).

The area is very important ecologically and was recently visited by many HK birdwatchers because the recent Hume's Leaf Warbler was on the opposite bank of the stream.

Greater Painted-snipe, Common Snipe and Pintail/Swinhoes Snipe were all seen in the stream bed today. Greater Painted-snipe is thought to have bred this year in a marshy area which is now very heavily polluted; this is certainly an important location for the species at Kam Tin.

The area is also regularly visited by Yellow-billed Grosbeak and large flocks of starlings.

The incident was reported to EPD this morning for action.

I received a phone call yesterday from EPD to say that they had visited the site of the pollution last Friday (the same day that I reported it!) They believe they have discovered who was responsible and will hopefully be able to prosecute.

The moral I think is that if you discover any similar cases, be sure to report it (EPD have a  hotline number (http://www.epd.gov.hk/epd/english/how_help/report_pollution/reportpollution.html) on their website). The more prosecutions that take place, the less likely people are to carry out illegal dumping, so the environment will be better protected.
