HK alread has its first wind turbine to harvast wind power. Now there are discussion and proposal for further wind turbine to be placed in various sites. I like to initiate a discussion on this topic, see whether HKBWS should choose a side up with a particular view.

1. Should we support wind power development in HK?

2. What conditions should be met before a wind turbine can be set up in a particular site?

Civic Exchange, a local non-profit public policy think tank, invites you to join a seminar focusing on offshore wind power in Hong Kong.

The seminar will outline details of the proposed wind energy development project in waters offshore of Hong Kong.  The seminar will also provide an opportunity to ask questions about this proposed project, its impact on Hong Kong and wind power in general.

Seminar Date/ Time: Friday 31st March, 5-7pm

Place: Helena May, Garden Room, 35 Garden Road, Central, Hong Kong

Further details of the seminar are included in the attached invitation which includes summary bios of the speakers.

Working jointly with Wind Prospect, a UK wind farm developer, China Light & Power have identified the Ninepin Group as the potential site for a wind farm in Hong Kong. The scheme includes up to 50 turbines that with a total output of 150MW by 2013.

In terms of the location of the potential site, I believe terns and seabirds, and also migratory birds will be greatly affected.

According to the 'Hong Kong Offshore Wind Farm in Southeastern Waters Project Profile' published in April, 2006:

"The offshore Project area is not of any known significance as a bird habitat or migration
route."

Were there any studies for the area around Ninepin Group on birds usage? I agree with isaac_chan that it is possible terns, seabirds and other migratory birds would be affected, especially when you look at the map in the pdf file, you can see the area of the potential site is quite large.

As a reply to Cran's query, I now put in a brief update on the progress of the wind farm project.

A comprehensive bird survey of the windfarm area has already started in May.   This study is carried out by a private consultant.  From what I understood, the survey will cover one full year.  The survey will be more frequent in the migratory seasons (autumn and spring).  HKBWS will continue to gather information on the whole windfarm project.
