Dear HKBWS Members,

Study of the Ecological Impacts and Potential Economic Habitat Management Benefits of Introducing Asian Water Buffalo Bubalus bubalis into the Freshwater Ponds at Mai Po Nature Reserve

Over the next 18 months WWF Hong Kong will be undertaking an important study upon the impact of introducing water buffalo to the freshwater ponds at Mai Po Nature Reserve. The study aims to find out if water buffalo can control the vegetation growing in and around the ponds and also bring benefits to birds at the same time.

For those of you walking around Southern Mai Po Nature Reserve, you will notice a buffalo fence enclosure and shelter in Sub-pond 24c designed to contain one buffalo. The enclosure is necessary for the project to ensure that the buffalo grazes a defined area, which we can study and research thoroughly. The shelter is required to hold the buffalo during health checks, but also for the animal to escape strong sunshine or heavy prolonged periods of rain. The shelter complies with relevant Hong Kong legislation which requires the structure to be a minimum of 3.6m high.

If you would like to learn more about this study, a project overview can be downloaded at the following WWF Hong Kong web page http://www.wwf.org.hk/eng/maipo/updates/index.html (english only). The project is funded through the Environmental Conservation Fund (ECF).

If you have any questions or need any further information please contact Bena Smith (bsmith@wwf.org.hk or 2471 6306), WWF Reserve Officer, Mai Po Nature Reserve.

Ms. Buffalo, age 5, will be responsible for looking after 1.4 hectare of wetland at Mai Po. Taking no salary but grass, she would help to save the reserve $170,000 in weed management.
