Theme: Review of the Construction of the Railway viaduct in Long Valley

Synopsis:
In 2000, the proposed construction of a railway viaduct through Long Valley, a famous site for bird watching, raised controversy among different sectors of the community, including the Environmental Protection Department, green groups and local residents. In the foreseeable future, the transportation network in Hong Kong will continue to expand.

By using Long Valley as an example, we hope that the seminar can bring together different stakeholders which were involved in the controversy, to discuss the issue from their perspectives and to review the results of the controversy and the current status of Long Valley. Hopefully, the audience will learn from the seminar and make a balanced judgment from listening to the different points of view. We believe that only through dialogue can conflicts between the parties be resolved.

Speakers:
Mr. James Blake of Kowloon Canton Railway Corporation
Mr. Elvis Au of Environmental Protection Department
Mr. Mike Kilburn of Hong Kong Bird Watching Society
Dr. Billy Hau of Department of Ecology and Biodiversity, University of Hong Kong
