Birds in Nepal 尼泊爾 (III)
Everest Region
RDPIII,F5+ 80-400VR or AFD180/2.8

It is my last submission of Birds in Nepal and all three below were taken in an acceptable quality during trekking in Everest Region.  You can see a lot of different birds in Nepal  (in various habitats : Alpine, grassland, wetland..etc).  You can visit my photo album to see more and anyone interested in birdwatching in Nepal can contact me for information.

Dear  Felixcat

You are right about the Lammergeyer, but the crow is I think a Raven and the third bird is a Scaly Laughingthrush.

cheers

Mike,

Thanks for your id.

In fact, I am not quite sureif the first one is Large-billed Crow or Common Raven.  Accroding to Birds of Nepal, Large-billed Crow has bomed head and large bill with arched culmen.  Probably you can see the features from the following picture.

http://felix.iplux.com/albums/Phakding_Namche_Crow/05_25.jpg

It is also said that the Himalayan forms of Large-billed Crow (there 4 races known in Nepal) are best differentiated from the Common Raven by absence of throat hackles, shorter and boarder wings.

So can you tell us further how you can differentiate them?  I have posted more photos on http://felix.iplux.com/Phakding_Namche_Crow, which may provide more information.  But, this kind of bird is (or both are) very common in the mountain but uncommon in ohter low-land or urban area (House Crow instead).

In addition, for others' information, Lammergeier has an unqiue habit of splitting bones for the marrow by dropping them from a great height, which I have seen unfortunately.  Maybe Forrest should keep you eyes open   when you see this big bird (100-115cm) in Nepal soon.

Daniel,

Thanks for your visiting my album and it is still under contruction as I have only scanned and posted half of my slides taken.  Yes, there are a lot topics for photographers and I think I will go there one more esp the national parks there.  Besides, the Nepal people are very nice and warm that attracts very tourists being there.  I think Forrest will feel what we have felt there soon.  Enjoy
