Yes they are the same - this species shows a lot of variation to the extent of the black colour on the back of the head.

Couldn't the bird in the New Zealand photo be a hybird between Pield Stilt (Himantopus himantopus leucocephalus) and Black Stilt (Himantopus novaezelandiae) ?

It shows extensive amounts of black on the breast, and there is no white line seperating the black on the mantle from the black at the base of the neck..which is a diagnostic feature of Pied Stilt.

I believe hybirds are not uncommon between the 2 species in New Zealand.
