Fabulous shot Angus.

Nam Sang Wai has got to be the best location for photographing Black-face Spoonbill, you can guarantee they are there every morning (provided its not high tide) and they are just so close and oblivious to people and traffic.

PS: you should have said that you shot it on a 50mm lens

Agree that NSW is probably the best place to shoot BFS in HK. Unfortunately, it looks like the place will be effectively shut for the next two years! (heard that work will begin there from 29-Dec till 2007!!! >:() But not sure I can managed too many shots with a 50mm lens! ;D

Just finished processing my images for yesterday. Below are two more shots for the BFS. I found that all the shots that I want to keep are taken before 9am. Not a single worthwhile shot after you have left!! :(

The only problem at NSW is that the early morning sun is straight onto the birds and it is difficult to get any modelling. Some shots look as though the warm color was added in post production.

Where as at Mai Po, generally the early morning shots are backlit and in my opinion the backlit shots look the best. The problem at Mai Po, is guessing whereabouts the birds will at 6.30 - 7am. It is such a large area and takes a lot of time to walk around, especially when lugging all the photographic equipment. OH for an electric vehicle to drive around in

All the birds in NSW are very friendly, although almost all are common species!
BFS, ducks and Avocet are especially friendly!
And it is really a good place for new bird watcher! ;D

Bob: I do like the direct lighting at NSW. ;D Regarding the warm color, I am still exploring how to best present it. Recently I tried to set the WB to approx. daylight, this should mimic what it would appear on films/slides. But I do found that sometimes it may appear too warm or a bit unnatural. Perhaps it would look better if I adjust the WB a bit towards neutral. I must admit I have become a bit obsessed with these golden lighting! ;D

Perhaps the effects with video is a bit different from still images, I found backlighting very difficult to work with most of the time. ::) I also wish there are electric vehicles for hire in MPNR, similar to those in golf courses. May be another source of revenue for WWF too! ;D

Golf buggies at MPNR - great idea! Or a Disney-style train that goes all the way round the perimeter so we can jump on and off wherever we like.   ;)  Even a humble bike hire would be great. Problem might be too many water hazards though and not too many bunkers.

I must be honest it was Neil that first made the suggestion, regarding an electric vehicle.

But maybe it is worth WWF considering obtain several electric golf buggies !

Any comments WWF?

Angus, regarding backlight filming, provided the subject occupies the majority of the frame and you have a good lens hood the rimlight effect can look very attractive.
