Q on swallows' movement pattern ~

Hi swallows experts i got a question on swallows' movement pattern.

When I had boat trips offshore Tai O I always saw Barn Swallows flying from Tai O towards the direction of Macau. Sometimes I saw they flying back from the Macau direction towards Tai O. Assuming they are really going far towards Macau, on the way there should have no resting islands (except the NaiLingDing Island which is very far from either Macau and Tai O).

I am curious to why do they keep moving out to the open sea? Their diets could be found in the open sea (mosquito)?   Perhaps they do that for no reason or I have missed some clues? Thank you
