It seems that Black-naped Terns have given up breeding at Mirs Bay after the continuous rains in the last month.  However over 30 birds were found in waters to the north of the area.

Do we have such data set of bird abundance in 2001? A bad weather persisted in the whole June in 2001. So, a comparsion could be made with such data set.

Such comparsion could allow us to see the impact of bad weather on the number of tern nests, thus we could know whether bad weather is one of the determinants on the nest abundance of terns.

More comments.

When carefully looking into the data, it looks likely that fewer birds visiting HK in the early breeding season in April and May (i.e. before the bad weather in June) than last yr. So, the decline may be caused by other factors.

Also, did the terns start to lay eggs or build their nests in June? It looks likely that the bad weather could affect the breeding success, rather than the abundance of breeding birds.

Comparing the data set in 2005 with the highest count in 2004 could miss some interesting difference. So, it may be better to compare the whole data set with each other.

My own personal view is that last year's disturbances by Peregrine Falcon and others have finally forced some Terns to stop coming to HK to breed.   This explains the decrease in number in May, and also affect the average count of Bridled Tern this year.

The recent rain affect the breeding success rate.  That actually cause the BN Terns in Kung Chau to leave the area early.  They have given up breeding in the remaining breeding season.

Hi Ho Fai,

Thanks for the feedback.

Just one comment on your feedback. Pls don't mind.

Do we have any data about the nest failure in respond to the Peregrine Falcon (s) in last yr? or the degree of disturbance. Colonially breeding birds will give up the breeding site only if there is a prolonged nest failure and disturbance.

It is hardly to believe that site abandonment of such big colony is due to the Falcon, esp terns should interact with natural predators over millions of yrs.

So, the Falcon may disturb some birds may not so serious that it caused severe nest failure in last yr. I guess other factors, like prey availability and the safety of wintering site may contribute the decline.

Perhaps it was migrating.  We saw a small group together with a Roseate Tern during TPEA's trip on 24/7/05.

On the 9th August 2005 at 5:20pm, a flock of around 30 black-naped terns were seen near the pier at Cho Wo Village, Tai Mong Chai, Sai Kung.  They were first seen far away in the sea next to the yachts, but then they gradually flew near the pier, entertaining us with a spectacular show with elegant flights plus occasional vertical dives for their fish meals. The spectacle lasted for about 10 minutes before each and every tern returned to the sea, stunning us with the extraordinary beauty of nature.

Isn't it true that the inner Sai Kung Sea is an unusual site to find such a big flock of black-naped terns?

Thanks for the report.  Yes, this is the first time that I hear about a big flock of Black-naped Terns at that area.  They probably came from the colony to the south east of Sai Kung - the small rocky island where we found 90 of them on 22 July. It seemed that they would go as far as the sea to the south of Hong Kong Island to forage.

By the way, did they do any boat chasing there? It could be a sign that they will be leaving soon.

Yes, they did chase after the yachts.

Maybe it is about time they leave Hong Kong.

More than a hundred of Black-naped tern (including adult and juvenile), a sign of breeding, were seen in the "rocky island" in Sai Kung. Also seen were a few of Roseate and Bridled Tern.

We also saw more than a hundred of Terns in a rocky island in Sai Kung during the outing on 3Jul and 22Jul!
Maybe we saw the same rocky island!
