Black-naped Tern Sterna sumatrana Eastern Water of Sai Kung 23/07/2006 Another flight shot taken couple of days ago on board of a rocking boat. The day turned out to be both sunny and clear! For exposing white birds under this condition one can use the Sunny 16 rules and dail in an exposure compensation of -1/3 EV as in this case. Alternatively, you can meter off an area of mid-tone using in-camera reflective meter. Take a test shot and check exposure using histogram. I tend to expose white for 1/3 less since any blown white won't be recoverable even in RAW! Remember the rules would work best when the subject is mid-tone and front lit; two hours after sunrise and two before suset. Hope this sharing of experience would help others! EOS-1D Mk II, EF400/5.6L Evaluative @ -1/3 EV, ISO 200, 1/2000s, f/5.6 KK Hui FRPS www.geocities.com/kkhui_001
