Unusual and busy BG for sure! ::)
Watch out for the exposure particularly on the second one ...
What eqpt was used for the shots?

I think the strong BG is quite instersting with light color tern 8)

It is realy realy hard hand held 5.9KG 600mm with 1.4X on a rocking boat :-/ very easy to get out of frame and no time to AF :P I wish I have 500mm :-[

both shoot have -0.7 ev, but the second one is too hight contrast .

A sturdy monopod will fit the job nicely in this case! ;D

KK , I have take a tripod with a " Kirk King Cobra style Action Head" ( I use a sidekick DIY ) on the boat, not much help , no space to use for this 2 short :P I not sure monopod can do better ?

Hendrix,

I opt for the suggestion of KK that a monopod do help.

So far I had tried once to shot tern in boat with EF500/4 IS when I had detached the EF1.4II. I still faced the same problem of getting out-of-frame photo, i.e. was not able to get high quality photo (in terms of stable, sharpness, composition etc.).

IMO, it was very unflexible. Though I could not shot with 500 on boat now, I think I would not retry as it is very danagerous (to my expensive lens) and inconvenience.
