Tern Island has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest in December 2005. :)

¡§SSSIs¡¨ may be land based or marine sites, which are of special interest because of their flora, fauna, geographical or geological features. ¡§SSSIs¡¨ are identified by the AFCD.

Normally no new development will be permitted within a ¡§SSSI¡¨ unless it is necessary for conservation of the site.

But how about the activities (e.g. diving and fishing) around there?

SSSI designation is meant for controlling the impact of new development.

Regarding conservation, we understand that AFCD will carry out patrols to the island on sundays and public holidays during the breeding season, as in previous years. The Tern Group will also continue with the surveys and monitor human disturbances to the island.
