Title: Your Best Shots - Boat Trip 10 Aug 06 八月十日燕鷗佳作集
Post by KK Hui on Aug 11th, 2006, 10:33am
It was the first photo shooting trip organized by me ever and thirteen (13) bird photographers joined. Our trip took us to the eastern water of Sai Kung where the three tern species, Bridled, Black-naped & Roseate, were found.

Despite the constant threat of bad stromy weather ahead that day I thoroughly enjoyed a wonderful day out with your company. Hope you did too!

I start this thread so everyone of you can post you best shots from the trip; have one of each species please!

Mine go like this ...

Roseate Tern

kk, thanks again for your effort in organising such a wonderful trip! I believe I can represent the others to say that we want more of such trips!! ;D

Like your Roseate pic. Very elegant! :D

I'll try to pick my "best" shots and post them here. But as I explained elsewhere, I think it will be a tough pick... ;D ;D ;D

I enjoy the trip very much. We can share with the same interest together with so many bird photographers! 8) :D

Million thanks for KK's arrangement. :-*  Hope we will have the field trip again soon!! ::)

Here are the photos that I like most. I find that I was too concentrated on the Roseate Terns and Black-naped Terns as I had not much shots of the Bridled Terns. :P

Angus & Daniel, you both have great shots - all we have to do is organise some more trips.

Daniel, I love your 3rd shot against the rock face, its nice to see some color instead of HK's polluted sky as background

Truly amazing shots you folks!  ;D
Inspiring indeed!!!!

My picks so far are ...

Daniel CK Chan
http://www.danielckchan.com/b2006283.jpg
A perfect shot ... great down stroke, exposure control, and timing.

Angus Lau
http://www.pbase.com/anguslau/image/64983014.jpg
Love seeing the stretched wing, perfect timing. Would probably tone down the white just a tad.

648
http://www.feilee.net/img/LE4K1812.jpg
Great wing position for a head-on, sharp where it counts.

Look forward to seeing more. Keep them coming ...

Love #1 & #5 in particular. I see some detail loss in the white plumage and suspect you overdid it when applying NR ...  ???

kk, one major problem I have with the day's shoot was also the lack of details. :( I didn't apply any noise reduction while processing in PS. The only NR is probably the default color noise reduction applied by Capture One during raw conversion. Perhaps I should reduce or disable that. But I suspect it might have caused by hand holding on a rocking boat, even though I kept the ss at 1/2000s or higher...

I'd disable the color NR in C1. Get your photo editing in PS except DEC and WB and you're more in control. I hate anything auto! I don't think the loss detail in white was contributed by the ss in this case. In fact I found 1/2000s is ideal for general shooting from a rocking boat with a 400mm lens.

Pippen,
Love those closeup shots of yours. I think using a 500/4 does make a difference! A must for my next shoot out on terns at sea ...

I agree with KK that a 500/4 is a must for next trip because of the details I love.  However, I have already sold it for long time and I miss it very much. Maybe I should bring the 600/4 next time but I dare not to think about my arms...... :-[ :-[
