I notice from the AFCD website that on Saturday (25th March) it will one month since the last recorded case of H5N1 in Hong Kong.

Surely this anniversary is an ideal opportunity for the HKBWS and its members to increase pressure on the government to push for the reopening of Mai Po and resumption of normal birdwatching activity.  The continued closure of the reserve is utterly ridiculous.

The latest evidence suggests that the disease in humans only infects the lower sections of the respiratory tract, which is why it is so difficult for humans both to contract the disease and to pass it on.

It is a disease primarily of poultry, which cannot be caught from coughs/sneezes, only through close contact with infected birds.  Surely this means there is no risk from wild birds.

So why are wild birds blamed and why is Mai Po still closed when there is NO scientific justification for such action?

I have placed my Mai Po permit in front of an incense burner and performed a mourning ritual.

Very unfortunate incident, that this peregrine was found near Mai Po. Perhaps the government will use this reason to keep Mai Po closed.
