Introduction of Mikania
Mikania (Mikania micrantha), belongs to the family Compositae, is an exotic perennial climber. It climbs up other plants and to the canopy for sunlight. The leaves and stems of Mikania cover up the host plants which then receive little sunlight and consequently the growth of host plants are affected. Mikania grows very fast and reproduces rapidly, therefore it is also named ¡§mile-a-minute weed¡¨.

The Conservancy Association is going to hold a Mikania removal activity in Long Valley. HKBWS will assist in arranging volunteers to participate in this activity. Details of the activity are as follow:
Date: 11th June, 2006 (Sunday)
Time: 9:00a.m. ¡V 12:30p.m.
Venue: Long Valley
Gathering Place: Taxi station outside Choi Yuen Estate Exit, Sheung Shui KCR Station (Coach will be arranged and travel between Long Valley and Sheung Shui KCR Station)
Quota: 50

Important notes:
1. This activity is not suitable for children;
2. The Conservancy Association will provide bottles of water and gloves for volunteers.
3. Casual wear is recommended, long sleeves and trousers are preferred. Please bring hat, sun block, insect repellent. Participants are suggested to bring spare clothes.

30 HKBWS volunteers participated in the Mikania Removal Activity held by the Conservancy Association on June 11, 2006. The activity is a success that more than 80 bags of Mikania were cleared. We offer our heartfelt thanks to all volunteers participated in this activity. Their contribution is important to the conservation of Long Valley. However, Mikania grows very rapidly and threatens farmlands. We hope that volunteers can actively participate in this kind of activity in future and offer a hand to the protection of Long Valley.

Dear volunteers,

On behalf of HKBWS, I like to thank you all for participating on this event. I heard that although the weather is nice, the work is actually hard enough to give you sore muscles for a few days. I like to join in myself, but I happen to be surveying Terns in Tap Mun that morning.

HKBWS will put up a way to reward society volunteers. Details will be announced later.
