Many thanks for publishing this data

It would be very interesting to know how this  compares to previous years in terms of total numbers and any clear changes in distribution.

One more question. Has the HK record been broken, or are many of the the birds in other parts of Deep Bay?

Cheers

Mike,

Thanks for your post and below are comparisons to the last year results.

Total - 2346, 2041 (increase 15%)

Taiwan - 1280, 1104 (increase 16%)
Deep Bay - 462, 335 (increase 38%!!!)
China mainland and Hainan - 234, 247 (decrease 5%)
Macao - 39, 52 (decrease 25%)
Vietnam - 46. 63 (decrease 27%)
Japan - 258, 215 (increase 20%)
Korea - 27, 25 (increase 8%)

So, the spoonbills were living well last year and this year Deep Bay area including both sides in Hong Kong and Shenzhen has a very large increase.

The figure of 462 is not the highest figure in the Deep Bay in this winter. During our monthly waterbird count, we actually have a count of 496 BFS in the January waterbird count (on 24 Jan 2010).

So, the number of BFS is also approaching to 500 in the Deep Bay (together with the total number of bird species recorded in HK)!!!

Is there any different in the meaning between "Macao" and "Macau"?

Macao SAR",
Portal do Governo da RAE de Macau

Good to hear that BFS increased by 15%.  I had this expectation after hearing that about 500 nests has been counted in 2009 summer in Korea.  However, the percentage of immature BFS in Hong Kong has not shown a big increase.  This is something that we haven't understood completely yet.

Also, from the figures, the population in the south has actually decreased, despite the very cold weather during the autumn and early winter period.
