Cuckoo Call Dates : Spring 2011

Thank you to those people who provided dates for cuckoo calls in the last few years  <   Previous Postings  , 2010 Postings >

For the coming 2011 spring period it would be great this practice continues and so once again please can members kindly report dates of first heard cuckoo calls on the BBS. Please note it is only the date of the first call in Hong Kong for each species which is needed; Common Koel, Plaintive Cuckoo, Large Hawk Cuckoo, and Hodgson's Hawk Cuckoo. i.e. there's no need to post up the 2nd/3rd.... call for each species.

Same as before, if any member can dig out call dates for any of the years between 1990 to 2003 it would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

The Mai Po Team

There seem to be Large Hawk Cuckoos beginning to call- warm ups rather than full calls.  Started on the 10 March in Pak Tin Kong, Lam Tsuen.  I am sure I heard a distant Chestnut-winged Cuckoo calling too!

It gets very noisy around here when they all start calling properly, great until there is a LHC outside the bedroom window.

LHC heard this evening (14 March) in the Nam Shan, Sai Kung area for first time this spring. It seems like a pretty simultaneous, rather belated start-up this year, due to fairly low evening  temperatures and perhaps more significantly low humidity in the last two weeks or so, I assume.

What exactly does the warm-up call sound like?

Pretty much their usual call but not quite so enthusiastic- a couple of goes and then a "mutter" or shriek.  No real conviction, you could tell they weren't committed to it.

A Large Hawk Cuckoo has been calling at LFS (where they are not common) since 30 March. It only calls at dawn, dusk or after dark (up till about 9:00 pm). I have yet to hear it during broad daylight.

I had Hodgson's Hawk Cuckoo calling in Pak Tin Kong early this morning (5 May 2011).  I believe Brendan reported one calling at Tai Po Kau the same evening (4 May 2011).

Fai Jai had 2 or 3 a few weeks ago in that area already.  I now realize Hodgson's Hawk Cuckoo seems to call most frequently after dark. Probably an overlooked species.

But I can't hear in Lam Tin!
