Lamma Island 南丫島

Lamma Island 南丫島

Not sure if Lamma is a "hotspot" but we have our moments.  This morning was definitely "hot" with the first significant passage of Chinese goshawks this year.  They seem to use the hill between Tai Peng and Pak Kok villages ("Bobsy's Forest") as a kind of marshalling area, and typically gather and wheel around for a while to allow stragglers to catch up, or maybe just to gain height on thermals (pic 1) before lining up and heading off north together (pic 2).  These were taken this morning around 8.40, and this was the biggest single group of 27 individuals.  There were a few more over a two hour period totalling 58 in all.

Great sighting Geoff.

I've been waiting to see this on Po Toi for the last two weeks, but nothing. I wasn't there today though, may have missed a good sight. Perhaps someone else was.

Another good movement of Chinese goshawks on Lamma this morning, same spot.  Starting at 8.35, there was a procession of singles or groups (largest 28 individuals) for the next two hours, giving a total of 126.  This is almost certainly an underestimate of the real number, as some small circling groups are really quite hard to see high in the sky and soon disappear into the clouds.  In the earlier part of the period, however, there was a good deal of low cloud, and the birds were flying much lower than yesterday, affording some good views of individul birds.
