Ng Tung Chai 梧桐寨 2006 Winter 冬

Speckled Piculet!

Just when I was on my way down at about noon, thinking that Asian House Martin would be my best bird for the day (1 flying over the village), I saw this lovely little bird in the forest above the village (near the corner with the yellow sign and rubbish bin). It was in a mixed flock with minlas, fulvettas and a few warblers (Pallas' was the only one I identified for sure). It didn't hang around for very long but I got a good view of it tapping on a branch.

Thank you to the other birdwatcher (whose name I don't know)with whom I chatted for a few minutes, who reminded me that I should look for this bird, otherwise I probably wouldn't have seen it. We heard what we thought was a woodpecker drumming across the valley, but louder than the piculet. He said he came to Ng Tung Chai 15 times before he got to see the piculet, so I feel very lucky to have seen it on my 2nd visit. Now for the grosbeaks!

Cheers, Koren
