Mount Austin

There are several easy walks from the Peak Tram Station by which this site can be covered. It is an excellent place to begin to learn Hong Kong's common woodland birds, such as Chinese Blue Magpie, Crested and Chinese Bulbul, Japanese White-eye, and Magpie Robin. There are almost always Black Kites circling overhead.

Youcan take the flat , but often rather busy (with pedestrian traffic) circular walk along Harlech Road and Lugard Road. Where these join, half-way round the circuit, you can follow Hatton Road down to Hong Kong University and Lung Fu Shan, or climb High West (its not well covered, but Chinese Pitta has been recorded!!).

Alternatively, follow Mt Austin Road to the top of the hill and explore the trail known as the Governor's Walk and Victoria Peak Gardens. This site is especially productive for passerines during spring and autumn, when it can attract many migrant thrushes. It often produces the first Japanese Yellow Buntings of the spring migration during the annual Big Bird Race in early April.

The easiest access is by the Peak Tram, or take no. 15 bus from the bus terminal below Exchange Square in Central.
