Black-faced Spoonbill census by area for 29-31 January 1999
|
Past Statistics: World Count, Taiwan Count and Hong Kong Count
In the early 1990s, counts were not synchronized and some individuals might be double-counted. From winter 1996/97, synchronized count have been started and counts of the spoonbill were only taken place in mid-January. This can provide the best picture of the number of the spoonbill. Numbers have been increased sharply in past few years and approximately about 11% increase per year (Dahmer and Felley in prep.). The known world numbers of the Black-faced Spoonbill have been increased three times from the 288 individuals of 1990 to 969 individuals in January 2002. However, numbers are only increased in major sites (Tsengwen Esuary, Taiwan, and Mai Po, Hong Kong) and in Japan. Numbers have decreased or fluctuated in other sites (Dahmer and Felley 2002).
