Just planning to purchase a lens for my D20 to take general bird photo. I'd like to know which of the below sitting is better for mid-range photo. a.) 400mm f/5.6 or b.) 300mm f/4 + 1.4x extender Could any photographer help me in this way? Gary

If your prime subject is birds I'd go for the EF400/5.6L to start with. It's a great lens for bird in flight shooting renowned for its fast AF acqusition too . KK Hui FRPS www.geocities.com/kkhui_001

Though I am using 300/4 coupled with 1.4X, I agree 400/5.6 is a good start for bird photograhpy. Read this FAQ from Arthur Morris for "Better Lens for Bird Photography".
