Rufous-gorgeted Flycatcher 橙胸姬鶲 Ficedula strophiata Mt. Gaoligong, Yunnan, China 02/1/2004 www.geocities.com/hbirdk/RGFLYCATCHER.JPG I searched through my reference books and I think the colour pattern of this bird looks like a Rufous Gorgeted Flycatcher. It has white on the side of tail. It also has white eyebrow and dark throat but no rufous/orange patch on the throat, which the books mentioned. To me it stood up like a robin, but I don't think it's a Blackthroat, nor a White Tail Robin. I'm not sure. I still find it difficult to distinguish between a robin and a flycatcher. Please help identifying this bird. Thanks. Bernard.

Hi Bernard I can't see your photo (don't know why) Your record sounds like Rufous-gorgetted Flycatcher (although I would be hesitant to confirm it without a photo) and I have seen several in this location and 2 in Hong Kong. The rufous throat is very hard to see in the field and is not necessary to confirm identification of this species. Have you checked which other similar species occur in Gaoligongshan and eliminated them? Cheers Mike

Hi Mike, Now the photo can be easily viewed as it is kept in BBS. Please have a look again. I didn't see any other species with similar colour pattern. You mentioned this species was seen in Hong Kong twice. Are they considered as naturally occured or escape ? Thanks again. Cheers Bernard.

Hi Bernard Nice photo! I am happy to confirm your original ID as Rufous-gorgetted Flycatcher. It is a naturally-occuring bird in Hong Kong. You should be able to find the records in the Avifauna of Hong Kong. Cheers Mike
